Does My Voice Over Internet Protocol VoIP Phone Work With Medical Alert Systems?

Medical Care Alert on Jun 30th 2025

VoIP is now very common, but there are some limitations when it comes to medical alert systems.

Landline phone service used to come over copper wire.  Now it comes over the internet using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP).  And not all VoIP services are the same.  Are you confused yet?

HOME Medical Care Alert SystemMedical Care Alert's HOME Medical Alert System can work with your VoIP phone service if it's from a major carrier like Comcast, Spectrum, AT&T, Cox, etc.   Our system will plug into the back of your modem, and your phone will share that connection using a phone jack splitter that we include with your system.

Important Considerations for VoIP with Medical Care Alert:

  • VoIP Compatibility: The HOME system needs to be plugged into the phone jack on the back of your cable modem if your phone service is bundled with your cable TV or internet, and your phone service is through the modem.
  • Specific VoIP Providers Not Supported: Some VoIP providers, such as Ooma, Magic Jack, Vonage, and Dish Satellite phones, are NOT supported with any medical alert systems due to low signal quality.
  • Alternative Solutions: If you don't have a landline or a supported VoIP service, Medical Care Alert offers a cellular version of the HOME system that uses the AT&T or Verizon cellular network, requiring no landline, personal cell phone, internet, or Wi-Fi.
  • Power Outages: VoIP systems are dependent on the internet and power. If there's a power outage, your VoIP phone line may become nonoperational, and the HOME system connected to it won't be able to place an emergency call. The cellular version of the HOME system has a built-in backup battery to function during power outages.
  • Internet Connection Quality: VoIP relies on a stable and fast internet connection for reliable communication.

Install HOME system for VoipIn summary, Medical Care Alert's HOME system can work with most VoIP services from cable providers, it's crucial to confirm compatibility with your specific provider and consider the potential limitations, especially during power outages. If you have any concerns or need to verify compatibility, it's best to call Medical Care Alert directly at 877-913-3680.

What Is VoIP?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone service is a technology that allows you to make and receive phone calls over the internet instead of traditional phone lines. Instead of relying on physical copper wires, VoIP converts your voice into digital signals that travel over an internet connection.  VoIP phone service is usually provided by your cable company, but there are other ways to connect through your computer or internet connection.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

How it works:

VoIP converts your voice into digital signals, breaks them into packets, and sends them over the internet. The recipient's device reassembles these packets into your voice on the other end.

Cost savings:

VoIP can be more cost-effective than traditional phone service, especially for long-distance or international calls, as it leverages existing internet infrastructure

Features:

VoIP systems often include features like call waiting, call routing, voicemail, and even video conferencing, often at a lower cost than traditional systems.

Flexibility:

You can make and receive calls from various devices like computers, smartphones, and VoIP-enabled phones, as long as they are connected to the internet.

Business applications:

VoIP is widely adopted by businesses for its cost savings, scalability, and advanced features, often offered as a cloud-based service.

Potential drawbacks:

VoIP relies on a stable internet connection and electricity, and performance can be affected by internet speed and reliability. If your power or internet go out, you lose your phone line.
